Autism is a developmental disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate with others. People with autism are known to struggle with social interactions, speech and self-care. It is estimated that at least 10 million people in China have autism.
In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared April 2 World Autism Awareness Day, to highlight the need for autistic people's quality of life to be improved so that they can lead full and meaningful lives and integrate into society. Today is the eleventh World Autism Awareness Day.
When Luo Ben promised to help his friend out by doing some temporary coaching one year ago, he never thought that he'd develop such a close relationship with 43 autistic children.
On April 2, 2017, the Harbin Floorball Federation started their floorball training course for people with autism to mark the 10th World Autism Awareness Day.
“Floorball is easy to learn and can help players become stronger physically. It also promotes their mental development and boosts their coordination,” said 42-year-old Luo, who became a PE teacher at a primary school in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, after retiring from the national ice hockey team in 1997.
“I was familiar with the sport because it's also taught at our school,” he said. “Therefore, when I was asked to give some lessons, I agreed without hesitation.”
Teaching floorball to autistic students is not without its difficulties, however.
During the first two-hour lesson, Luo found himself doing little more than chasing after the students and trying to get them to do as they were told.
“Autism is a developmental disorder that affects an individual's ability to communicate with others,” he said. “At first, nobody listened to me or gave any responses to my commands.”
He only began making headway when he asked the players' worried parents to wait outside during class.
“People with autism lack the necessary capacity for regular social interaction and are unable to fully take care of themselves, so most of the parents feel like they can’t leave their children alone for even a moment,” said Luo. “But I wanted them to have some freedom during my classes, even if it is just for a short time.”
When the parents found that after only one class, Luo was able to call out each student’s name and remark on their individual personality traits, they soon began to relax.
“I believe that when I call their names seriously, they recognize my respect for them,” Luo said. “I want them to know that we are equals.”
After a few lessons, two of the permanent coaches found that they were unable to carry on teaching the course, but Luo, who began as a temporary helper, stayed and volunteered to teach the students every Saturday morning.
In July, Luo set up a special floorball team for his students and received a larger training pitch and better equipment from Harbin Floorball Federation.
He called the team "Star Dream".
"In China, ‘children of the stars’ is a phrase used to describe autistic children,” he said. “But in fact, all the members of my team are ages 16 to 30.”
“China has established a complete system for helping autistic children, but when they finish their nine years of compulsory education in school, they have no place to go. They need much more attention actually,” he said.
“I found that there were fewer suitable places for my son to go and activities for him to do as he grew up,” said one of the children's parents. “So when I learned about this course, I decided to take him along, even though I knew nothing about floorball at the time.”
After several months’ training, the team were able to put on quite a performance - standing neatly in line, following the coach’s orders and even taking part in a friendly match.
Some of the parents have also been pleasantly surprised by the changes they've noticed in their children.
“He began to help me do housework, such as sweeping the floor, washing dishes and even cooking some simple meals,” said one mother, who couldn’t hide her excitement. “Saturday has become the day that I anticipate the most.”
In fact, Saturday is now many of the parents' favorite day of the week.
Because for two hours, they can stop worrying about their children, leave them in Luo's capable hands and relax.
“I have never seen Luo get angry with them,” one said. “We trust him completely.”
“Coaching the team has actually changed me,” Luo said. “In the past, like many middle-aged men, I spent most of my spare time hanging out with friends, playing cards and doing other meaningless things. Now, besides coaching, I also spend time trying to help people with autism.”
At the end of 2017, Luo rented an apartment and turned it into a studio for his team members to learn handicrafts.
As well as their coach, he became their teacher - showing them how to make flower pots, coin purses and paper roses, among other things, using techniques he had learned in advance.
“I take them to sell what they have made,” Luo told China Daily. “Some of their handiwork can be a little crude, but by making these things they can know that they are useful to society. That’s enough.”
“Autism is a lifelong disorder that cannot be cured. I just do what I can to help them integrate into the outside world. I will stay with them until the day I can no longer stand,” he said firmly.
