To the best of my knowledge this is the only tea in the world that is completely untouched by hand. The White Tea story is almost like a fairy tale. During the 5th and 6th century AD in the dynasties of Emperor Tsong and Tsang , the Chinese mandarins are said to have employed virgins to harvest the white tea.
The virgins cut the white tea with golden scissors, it fell into a golden bowl and it was given as a tribute to the Emperor. The only part of the human anatomy that touched the tea was the lips of the Emperor.
The production of what is called ‘Tribute teas’ was a closely guarded secret. The penalty for divulging the secrets of tea enshrined in the Imperial Chinese constitution was death! The secrets of Chinese tea making were discovered by British writer masquerading as a journalist. He wrote a book titled the ‘Tea Thief’
I was a professional tea planter in charge of almost 100 000 acres of British and later state owned tea plantations on the rooftop of our Island-Nuwara Eliya. If it was known that I was looking for immaculate girls with golden scissors and golden bowls to harvest tea, my colleagues would have surely thought that I had bats in the Belfry!
I then happened to visit Grasse a perfume city in the South of France. I met a perfumier, also called a nose. He had on his counter small parcels of jasmine flowers from about 15 different countries. I asked him why he had to get such small parcels from different parts of the world. I asked him ‘is there a difference’. He answer was quite astonishing. ‘Of course, there is a difference’ he said ‘the difference is only in the smell of the sweat from the hands of the pickers’. He went on ‘sweat and human oils are a manifestation of your food habits, people who eat different types of food exude specific smells’.
I immediately realized that these pearls of wisdom were known to the ancient Chinese tea masters. I made the white. It became a world story, assuming celebrity status in the tea world, as the best white tea available.
There was then an unanticipated occurrence. A Middle Eastern Royal House placed an order for this white tea with the condition that we have it’s ingredients analyzed.
The analysis by SGS the world famous Swiss company revealed that the white tea had 10.11% anti oxidants-the highest in any beverage, present naturally. It had no insecticide or pesticide residue. The caffeine content was very low.
Medical experts say that this is an ideal beverage to boost the body’s immunity system, that it is an anti carcinogenic.
This in a nutshell is the story of the Handunugoda Virgin White Tea.
