New coatings concepts wow trade show visitors

“From supplier to solution provider”: that’s what Schekolin sees as its strategic alignment and thrust, especially when it comes to providing coatings for high-quality plastic, glass and metal packagings. And it was to make this key transition, too, that the company invested in a fully-automated coatings development lab last year.

Schekolin has since expanded its expertise with the new facility and developed a number of promising coatings concepts. And the Metpack trade fair in Essen (Germany) at the beginning of May offered the ideal platform to present these to an international specialist audience. Metpack is, after all, the world’s leading trade show for metal packagings, and is attended by all the key players in this specialist field.

In the show’s customer discussions it was BPA-free products that attracted especially strong interest. Schekolin is particularly well equipped here with various coating systems. And the company was able to present multiple model projects for coating tin cans, interior protection for aerosol monoblocs and aluminium tubes, seam protection powder solutions for three-piece cans and interior protection powders for aerosol monobloc applications.

One source of particular interest was the new water-based and BPA-free spray coating system for aluminium twist-off caps. Here electromagnetic induction (EMI) heating is used to harden the coating evenly on the deep-drawn cap in seconds. In the past, the procedure has been to coat the aluminium first and then deep-draw the cap. But this has often led the coating to lose some of its shine, and the resulting product can be left with ugly edgings, too.

The new EMI procedure offers triple benefits – ecological, visual and economic – over the traditional approach. The coatings used are water-based; the finished product looks a lot better; and the use of EMI reduces process costs. And it was these three advantages that aroused particular visitor interest.
 
A new look

Schekolin also produced a new image brochure and new product flyers for the Metpack event. “The new documentation puts a strong focus on our products,” explains General Manager Hans Peter Maier. “And we’ve underlined this further by using coatings in the documents that give a 3D effect. We’ve had a lot of good feedback on this, too, which confirms to us that the combination of an appealing look, professional expertise and well-structured product and service information goes down very well with the customer.” A new modular stand system rounded off Schekolin’s highly successful appearance at this year’s Metpack event.

Refurbishment under way

It was back in 1973 that Schekolin moved from Schaan to its current Gamprin-Bendern premises. The ravages of time have gnawed away at the Bendern buildings since then, and a refurbishment had been on the agenda for some time. One particular concern was the uneven floors, which were attributable to the concrete construction methods used, and which had come to represent a major safety hazard.

The refurbishment was finally embarked on this March, and is now in full swing. Three production halls with a total area of some 5,400 square metres are having their floors replaced. The project is being led by plant manager Jürgen Ritter. And he’s supported in his endeavours by various internal units as well as architects Weber & Partner and Späth Consulting, which has helped him assign the work to 19 construction companies.

To ensure that all its customers continue to enjoy their usual reliable service and punctual supplies, Schekolin has carefully timetabled the various phases of the project, which is scheduled for completion on 22 August. The refurbishments of the production and lab facilities have demanded particular attention here; and staff have worked well into the evening on occasions to make up for any delivery delays. So Schekolin’s management would like to voice its sincere thanks to all the personnel who have been helping to ensure day in, day out that the present refurbishment has no adverse impact on the company’s customers.

The refurbishment also offers an opportunity to implement the recommendations of the LEAN project, which was conducted last year. The machinery layout has been rearranged to match the materials flow, for instance, to shorten the transports required. So all in all, Schekolin’s current Bendern refurbishment marks a further milestone towards an advanced production facility.
